Acting Agencies
Not
to say that some acting agencies are bad and some are good—quite
the contrary. Though I am sure there are some at lower standards
than others, the main point is that different agencies will serve
different purposes for different clients. If you are looking for
an acting agent, be sure to know what you’re looking for in
and agent. If you want an acting agent that will get the job done
right once he or she has been hired, check out the agencies that
have had the kind of success with their clients that you hope to
achieve for yourself.
Acting agencies will contract with clients who are looking to
start working as extras in films or television, and acting agencies
will also search for lead and principal roles for their clients—depending
on the client. Acting agencies will help you find both union and
non-union work. Some acting agencies will have a lot of agents working
for them, and in some agencies there will be only one or two.
There are lots of acting agencies out there—with so many
to choose from you might think ‘so I just pick one, right?’
No, it is not that simple, as an actor or aspiring actor, acting
agencies will likely play a very important role in your success.
So be careful.
I also realize that as much as you need to find what you are looking
for in a talent agent, that talent agent also needs to find what
he or she is looking for in a client. Make sure to keep in touch
with your agent, and continue to polish your acting skills. There
are, as in any business, certain “tricks of the trade”
Your talent agent may be able to suggest ways to improve your chances
of success that you have not yet considered. Finding the right agent
might turn out to be the best thing you can do to become the actor
you want to be.
Whether you are looking for small parts to get started out, or
larger roles in film; roles in theatre or television—you will
need the right acting agent to find you the auditions. If you are
not one already, our acting agent may be quick to recommend that
you become a union member.
Ask questions and learn certain facts about the acting agencies
you are considering before you choose one:
· Does the acting agency maintain a large or a small roster?
There are advantages to both.
· Will the acting agent pay close attention to your careers,
or simply act as a booking agent for you?
· Should you choose to leave an acting agency to find a new
one if the previous is no helping you succeed? Find a good place
to draw the line.
· You may find an acting agency you seem very compatible
with, but who is relatively unknown. Taking him or her on is a risk
but remember, sometimes that risk is worth it.
