Acting courses

Acting coursesSo, you are thinking about taking some acting courses. The first thing you want to do is identify whether taking acting courses will get you closer to your career goals. Are acting courses the only way to get into the acting business? You’ll want to make sure that you are getting value for the time, money and effort that acting courses will take.

Taking classes and courses does not guarantee you a door into Hollywood or onto the Broadway stage, but formally trained actors are often backed up by their education in ways that simply would not happen otherwise. Acting courses add structure to an actor’s portfolio. Often an actor will come out of a course with a portfolio he or she may not have had previously.

Courses in filmmaking and screenplay writing often add to an actor’s repertoire in ways that can pay off in the future. If you want to become a film director, the course work portfolio will give evidence of your talents in this line of work. Your dimension and appeal within the acting world will have widened in that you are now not only an actor but are also a writer with directing experience.

Take time to evaluate your career goals. Is acting just a hobby that you want to participate in every now and then? Do you plan to pursue another career path for your livelihood? Or is acting a passion that you plan to devote yourself to?

If acting will be a sideline in your life, you may want to add acting courses that are part of the acting world, but do not necessarily break the bank either in terms of money or time. An acting course or two may be accompanied by courses in related fields such as film lighting, editing, sound, cinematography and producing. Consider carefully what it is you want to accomplish before selecting your acting courses.

Types of acting courses vary according to film school approach. There are industry schools, experimental schools and independent schools. Industry schools will offer the type of acting courses that train to conform to Hollywood structure. Experimental schools will provide acting courses that encourage the student to develop his or her own film theory and acting art. And Independent schools will offer acting courses that teach acting foundation, but do not conform to Hollywood structure. Which type are you interested in? Have you thought about this?

Acting courses will definitely enhance your talent in the world of performance. Take the time to carefully consider your goals and then structure a good plan of action for selecting your acting courses. by Selia Franco Pender
